Competitive advantages of the Kostanai region

The Kostanay region was formed in 1936, on July 29th.
Territory of the region equals to 196.0 thous. sq. km.
The region includes: 16 districts and 4 cities of regional subordination.
Administrative center of the region - the city of Kostanay with a population of approx. 226 thous. people, it's located at the distance of 690.8 km from the capital of Kazakhstan, the city of Astana.

Natural and climatic conditions
Annual precipitation equals to 250-300 mm in the north and 240-280 mm - in the south of the region. Vegetation period lasts for 150-175 days in the north and 180 days - in the south. There are about 300 small rivers within the territory of the region. The largest rivers are the Tobol river (800 km within the territory of the region) with its tributaries and the Torgay river (390 km). Verkhnetobolskoe, Karatamarskoe and Amangeldinskoe water reservoirs are located on the Tobol river. There are more than 5000 lakes in the region, the largest of those are: Kusmuryn, Tengiz, Koybagor, Akkol, Sarykol, Alakol, and etc, 354.4 thous. ha of specially protected natural reservations which include 1 nature reserve, 3 state nature (wildlife) sanctuaries and 9 state natural monuments.

Population of the Kostanay region equals to 880.8 thous. people.
People of more than a hundred nationalities and ethnic groups reside in the region.
Population density - 4.5 persons per square kilometer.

Within the territory of the region, there are 43 schools carrying out technical and professional training on 154 specialities with a total number of students of 31 thous. people, and 8 higher education establishments which educate 25 thous. students.

Transport infrastructure

Air transportation
Kostanay airport is located 2 kilometers south-westwards of the outskirts of the Kostanay city, and 5.6 km away from its administrative center. It has been assigned a status of international airport and performs about 1700 flights per year.

Railway transportation
Kostanay railway station building erected in 1974 is located in the north-western part of the city. It has been assigned a status of 1 class railway station.
Working length of railway tracks of the Kostanay railway section equals to 1452.3 km.
Kostanay railway section includes 7 freight stations and 46 intermediate stations.
In 2014, the cargo turnover amounted to 20337.3 mln. tons/km.

Road transportation
Republican, regional and local roads run across the territory of the region. Communication with the regional center is carried out via the following republican motor highways:

  • Kostanay - Petropavlovsk - Kurgan
  • Kostanay - Astana - Almaty
  • Kostanay - Kokshetau
  • Kostanay - Chelyabinsk - Yekaterinburg

Length of public motor highways equals to 9516 km, including:

The Kostanay region is the main agricultural producer in Kazakhstan.
The area of agricultural lands is 18.1 mln.ha, including 6 mln. ha of farmland is arable.
Average yield of grain and leguminous crops amounts to 12.4 dt/ha and that of oil-producing crops - 7.0 dt/ha.
In the Kostanay region, there are 40 licensed grain elevators and 4500 agricultural producers with a total storage capacity of 6.7 mln. tons.


Mining industry share in the industrial structure of the region equals to 41.3%, that of processing industry - 44.5%, that of electric energy and gas supply - 12.2%, that of water supply - 2.0%.
In 2014, industrial production output amounted to more than 3 bln. USD, including manufacturing industry output of 1.4 bln. USD.
